I am not one to paint you a pretty picture to make it easy to understand.

I will not follow your scripture and produce a pure plan.

I will however challenge you to take me as I am.

Rough around the edges, with a pencil in my hand.

I will sketch you an abstraction and let you perceive

What my mind is thinking for I rarely let you see.

What I have to offer is this trail where I have been

Rough around the edges, with this paper and my pen.

We get what we are given and need to decide.

Take it how it is, or break it open wide.

Changing this world is how I shall spend my time.

Never smoothing out the edges of this building I call mine.

discovery

The act of discovery drives me to explore the unknown of what lies around the corner. In architecture I value the building that makes you wander to find your way rather than one that shows itself immediately.

movement

view

Box on box on box can begin to feel stagnant or isolated but if we begin to cut through them and created visual or physical connections between the boxes we then can create spaces that can be more interesting due to the occupant’s experience.

light

Light should be used sparingly. We can use it to create visual effects by lighting a wall, lighting a ceiling. We can use it to draw the user closer. We can use it to warm the user sitting by the opening. But it should not be overly complicated for a ‘cool’ effect. It should be functional.

sound

A vertical space should create connections between levels. Sound can be a major factor in this relationship. Occupants of one level will hear those on an upper level and get the impression of the continuation of the space.

adventure

nature

I have always been the adventurous type. All through my upbringing in rural Maine I have constantly been exposed to the forest and the different adventures around every turn. There is nothing that excites me more than stumbling on a trail that parts the trees and winds its way through the underbrush disappearing in the distance calling me to follow it. The path directs you through the wildness of the forest directing you in the right direction but not containing you, you can diverge off at any point and delve into a mossy grove of ferns or a sun filled clearing reaching upwards to the sky. Roots act like staircases winding up through the threshold of the tree trunks, the shrubs and fallen branches create walls that spark the imagination to complete the space. The grey interiors accented with green draperies and mossy carpeting make me never want to leave.

material

space

Space is more important than form. The overall feeling of a space will create the experiential aspect, not just the form of the building.

instinct

quality

The quality of construction should be perfect so as not to distract from the quality of space. If one notices the poor craftsmanship he may disregard the success of the overall space.
